All ticket holders will be welcome at the reception which starts at 6:30 on Saturday, February 27th. This includes appetizers and refreshments. Everyone will be able to tour the exhibit before the concert and during the intermission. The concert will begin around 7:30
Lui was a Connecticut-based singer playing in noisy bars when she discovered the Folkway. Her performances with Horace Williams, Guy Wolff, and others quickly endeared her to the Folkway audiences, and her musical career got wings.
It was her return to the Monadnock Region at a concert in Nelson in June of 2009 that inspired the concept for this concert series.
These days Lui is devoting most of her energies to Kid’s Jam, a music education program for 5 – 7 year-olds, so we are especially fortunate to have her return to the Monadnock Region for a concert.
Dave Mallett’s “Garden Song” had already drifted down from Maine and was already being sung at Folkway open mikes when the composer himself arrived and delivered a shy but still engaging performance in 1976. He went on to become a nationally prominent songwriter and dynamic performer.
The songs Mallett writes and sings are filled with passion, evocative imagery, and a sense of the inevitable passage of time. The loss of American towns and rural landscapes is the subject of many of his songs, as are the issues of wilderness preservation and the struggle of the common man.
When he is not touring, the place where he makes his songs is in his writing room in an old farmhouse with a view across the field and a tintype of his great-great grandfather on the wall.
