English Country Dance Returns to the Monadnock Region
The Monadnock Folklore Society is pleased to announce a revival of their English Country Dance series. This year the theme is “Dance Around Monadnock”. Starting in February, there will be an English Country Dance in a different location around the Monadnock region each month through May.
On February 17 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. the series begins at the Historical Society of Cheshire County, 246 Main St., Keene, with Mary Jones of Turners Falls, MA teaching dances that will appeal to all, from experienced to novice dancers. Lovely music will be provided by Carol Compton on keyboard and recorder, and Thal Aylward on violin and viola.
English Country Dance is a form of social dance that harkens back to the days of Jane Austen and “Pride and Prejudice”, but its roots extend further back in time, and its traditions and innovations continue right up to the present. Hauntingly beautiful tunes, elegant yet simple steps, friendly people and beautiful surroundings combine to make going to an English Country Dance a pleasant and energizing experience. No previous experience or partner is needed. All of the dances will be taught. No special clothes are required, but comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended.
Admission to the dance is $10.00 per person. No reservations required.
Future dances, on March 17, April 14 and May 19, will be held at Bass Hall in the Peterborough, NH Historical Society, the Fitzwilliam Town Hall, and the Nelson Town Hall, respectively.
