The Monadnock Folklore Society presents the Nelson Second Saturday Contra Dance on May 11th, featuring Quena Crain calling with Neil and Russell Orzechowski.
Quena is a dance leader, caller and organizer for contras, squares and family and community dances. Having grown up with contra and social dancing, Quena caught the dancing bug early. The joy she takes from dancing is infectious and comes through in her fun calling and easy teaching style.
Dancers describe her as “clear, concise, warm, personable and fun.”
The Orzechowski brothers have been playing music since early childhood, and have performed many times in their family’s Sugar River Band as well as solo endeavors. Their innovative playing is grounded in the New England tradition of contra dance music.
Dancing begins at 8:00 PM, with a short workshop beforehand. Beginners and singles are welcome and all dances are taught throughout the evening. Admission is $8 or $6 for students and seniors.
The dance takes place in the historic Town Hall in Nelson, NH. For more information call 603.762.0235 or visit www.monadnockfolk.org. The Monadnock Folklore Society has presented contra dances and concerts of traditional music since 1982.
