KEENE’S NEWEST VOCAL ENSEMBLE TO PRESENT WORLD RHYTHMS AND HARMONY
The World Harmony Chorus is a small multi-age choir drawn together by their love of singing and particularly by the chance to sing traditional folksongs and vocal styles from around the world. The chorus was started two years ago as a class led by Will Thomas Rowan and Lynn Mahoney Rowan of Marlboro, Vermont. The Rowans are accomplished singers and teachers, having toured with the international Northern Harmony chorus and the world-famous youth chorus Village Harmony; they are currently among that group’s teachers. They have studied with Petrana Kucheva of Bulgaria, and Malkhaz Erkvanidae of the Republic of Georgia and the South African teacher, Matlakala Bopape; as well as many other international teachers. The couple have recently successfully auditioned in NYC and were selected to be music ambassadors in the prestigious American Music Abroad program for the coming year with their vocal quartet Windborne.
The concert is free by donation, appropriate for all ages, and will be followed by light refreshments.
Croatian, Bulgarian and Georgian love songs and a mother’s lament, a South Africa song of protest and for ‘beautiful rain’, contemporary shapenote hymns, an original Bayside Lament with a twist, and a slightly drunken Shaker melody: all are part of the repertoire of the Keene World Harmony Chorus; and will be performed on May 1st, at 7:30 pm in a short concert at the Keene Unitarian Universalist Church Parish Hall, 69 Washington Street, in Keene.
