Caller Mary WestleyThe Monadnock Folklore Society presents the Peterborough, NH First Saturday Contra Dance on June 1, featuring  with Mary Wesley calling with Pete Sutherland, Oliver Scanlon and Colin McCaffrey.

Caller Mary Wesley is active in Young Traditions Vermont, a non-profit fostering youth involvement in traditional dance and music, for which she helps coordinate various workshops, concerts and an annual Youth Showcase. She recently completed studies at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine.

The well-known multi-instrumentalist Pete Sutherland has decades of concert touring, teaching and studio production behind him, but he still loves to inspire dancers with his inventive fiddle playing.  As often as possible these days he is found on the bandstand in the company of his teenage protege, Oliver Scanlon. A junior at Lake Champlain Waldorf High School, Oliver has absorbed much of his mentor’s phrasing and dynamics and their tight twin fiddling are energizing dancers in an ever-widening range from their northern Vermont base. They will be ably backed by the versatile Colin McCaffrey on guitar.

The dancing begins at 8:00 PM, with an optional introductory workshop beforehand. Admission is $8 or $6 for students and seniors. The dance takes place in the historic Town House in Peterborough, NH at 1 Grove Street. For more information call 603.762.0235 or visit www.monadnockfolk.org. The Monadnock Folklore Society has presented contra dances and concerts of traditional music since 1982.
