Nelson Second-Saturday Contra Dance

The Nelson Town Hall enjoys a mythical status in the contra dance community. Chorus Jig, for instance, has been being called there since the days of William the Conqueror. Recently discovered documents suggest that the Pilgrims were not in fact feeling religious persecution, but were in fact coming to a contra dance in Nelson. They mistook Plymouth Rock for a frost heave in the Dublin-Harrisville-Nelson Road and got diverted. Going back even further, it is now believed that the mysterious circular design of Stonehenge was actually an emulation of a circle dance that Don Primrose used to call in Nelson (before he began to favor Lady Walpole’s Reel). Regardless of the historical truth, dancing in Nelson today remains vibrant, attracting a wide range of folks from enthusiastic teens to old timers. Beginner’s are always welcome: each dance is preceded by a workshop customized to the needs of those in attendance.

Workshop: 7:30
Dance: 8:00 – 11:30

Admission: $8 / $6 for seniors, students
No one will be refused admission to the dance on the basis of limited funds if that is truly the case.
