MFS welcomes Ethan Robbins, the guitarist/songwriter for Boston-based band Cold Chocolate to the Nelson Town Hall on Saturday, Oct 13 for an 8:00 PM concert. Admission is $15/$12(Sr/Jr).

We first learned of Cold Chocolate through one of our performers a few years back and have been trying to find a suitable date since then. Cold Chocolate is a groovy Americana group that fuses bluegrass, folk, and rock to create a sound all their own.  Ethan began his bluegrass career at Oberlin College where he began to explore how this hard-driving fast-paced genre could be stretched.  Since their formation in 2011, Cold Chocolate has shared bills with Leftover Salmon and David Grisman, and regularly performs at venues and music festivals up and down the East Coast.

The Monadnock Folklore Society presents the Peterborough, NH First Saturday Contra Dance on October 6, featuring Steve Zakon-Anderson calling with The Mystic River Trio.

Contra dance is a fun, relaxed style of folk dance which has flourished in New England since the 1700s. Partners form lines and dance a short sequence of steps with their neighbors. Dancers are welcome to bring a partner or a group of friends, but it’s not necessary – traditionally, dancers are encouraged to change partners throughout the evening.

Dance caller Steve Zakon-Anderson has been leading contra dances for over 25 years. He has performed at dance camps and festivals from Alaska to Florida. Steve’s clear teaching, precise calling, and sense of humor have made him a favorite of dancers of all ages and abilities.

The Mystic River Trio is Stephen Thomforde playing smallpipes, flute, and saxophone, Rick Kaufman on mandolin and Jeff Kaufman playing piano with foot percussion.

Stephen Thomforde is a woodturner and bagpipe maker living in Medford, Massachusetts. He is also an avid musician and plays Scottish Bagpipes of varying sizes and Wooden Flute. Jeff Kaufman is a multi-instrumentalist who lives in Boston and plays with the band The Free Raisins. He has performed in Peterborough, NH many times. Jeff’s dad, Richard, is playing in Peterborough for the first time.

The dancing begins at 8:00 PM. The dance also hosts a free jam session for beginning and intermediate musicians at 6:30 PM and a workshop for new dancers at 7:30 PM.

Admission is $10 or $7 for students and seniors.

☼ ☼ ☼ Windborne at the Nelson Town Hall Saturday September 8, 2018

The Monadnock Folklore Society presents internationally acclaimed vocal band Windborne making an appearance at the Nelson, NH Town Hall on Saturday, September 8 at 8:00 PM. They are touring in support of their new project: Song on the Times: A Songbook and Album for Social Struggle. Admission is $15/$12(Sr/Jr).

Windborne was catapulted to wider recognition after a video of them singing a protest song from the 1840s outside Trump Tower went viral, gaining over a million views between YouTube and Facebook. Windborne had set out to raise $5,000 for the project, but ended up raising over $80,000 from 2,600 people, from every state, and 22 countries around the world!

“Picking up the torch of folk protest music…old songs for new struggles”

Song on the Times is an illustrated songbook and album that collects music from working class movements for peoples’ rights in the US and UK over the past 400 years, and sings them for the struggles of today. The album features Windborne’s richly harmonized arrangements, accompanied by a book of beautifully illustrated lyrics and music alongside guest essays providing historical context from activists, singers, and scholars such as Eliza Carthy, Reggie Harris, John Sayles, Tony Barrand, and more.

The album has been getting rave reviews; SingOut! Magazine named it “One of the Best Albums of 2017” and praises Windborne as “Some of the finest singers of protest and folk music that I have ever heard.” No Depression writes: “Completely enthralled with them from the first notes…their harmonies are gorgeous,” and Blues and Roots Radio calls Song on the Times “Spectacularly good…utterly brilliant, a hugely impressive album.”

 While all four singers had other careers, ranging from trapeze artist to dance anthropologist, the outpouring of requests for performances led them to make spreading this music and message their full time work, and they are now touring across the US and UK, with performances in 20 states this year. Contra dance is a fun, relaxed style of folk dance which has flourished in New England since the 1700s. Partners form lines and dance a short sequence of steps with their neighbors. Dancers are welcome to bring a partner or a group of friends, but it’s not necessary – traditionally, dancers are encouraged to change partners throughout the evening.

Caller Jean Gorrindo from California is calling in New Hampshire for the first time. Her strong teaching and musical skills help her deliver dances that are flowing and fun.

The band Cloud Ten is Cedar Stanistreet, fiddle; Donal Sheets, guitar and cello; Arthur Davis, piano, banjo, trumpet; and Ness Smith-Savedoff on drums. Cedar Stanistreet is well versed in both traditional fiddle and classical violin. He studied violin performance at the Crane School of Music, and violin-making at the North Bennet Street School. Donal Sheets played jazz bass and classical cello from a very young age and has spent many years playing American and Irish folk music on cello and a variety of other instruments.

The dancing begins at 8:00 PM. The dance also hosts a free jam session for beginning and intermediate musicians at 6:30 PM and a workshop for new dancers at 7:30 PM.

The Monadnock Folklore Society presents the Peterborough, NH First Saturday Contra Dance on August 4th, featuring Tod Whittemore calling with the Sugar River Band.

Contra dance is a fun, easy style of folk dance which has flourished in New England since the 1700s. Partners form lines and dance a short sequence of steps with their neighbors. Over the course of the dance, each couple travels the length of the line and dances with every other couple. Dancers are welcome to bring a partner or a group of friends but it’s not necessary – traditionally, dancers are encouraged to change partners throughout the evening.

Caller Tod Whittemore has been calling dances for forty years, having been lucky enough to begin his career at the time when famous callers Ralph Page and Duke Miller were still active in the Monadnock Region. Tod has called dances all over the world and is known for his humor, energy, and infectious love of dancing.

The Sugar River Band is led by Jane Orzechowski of Newport, NH. She will be joined by her sons Francis and Russell playing piano and fiddle. Traditional arts apprenticeship grants from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts have helped to support each of them to learn contra dance music. They’ll be joined by Peterborough’s Sarah Bauhan on whistles and flute.

The dancing begins at 8:00 PM. The dance also hosts a free jam session for beginning and intermediate musicians at 6:30 PM and a workshop for new dancers at 7:30 PM.

9th Annual Folksoul Music Festival | Greenfield NH

On Sunday, August 19th, 2018 Fred Simmons and Leslie Vogel will be presenting the 9th Annual Folksoul Music Festival on their grounds at the corner of Mountain Road and Driscol Road in Greenfield NH.

Featured this year are seven bands, including Low Lily, The Kingsnakes, Abou Sylla’s Monadnock Drum Caravan and Guinean Brothers, Tara Greenblatt Band, Birl, the Folksoul Band, and the Folksoul Ensemble.

This event is family friendly, bring a blanket or camp chairs and a picnic if you wish, and/or taste the delicious local foods provided at a couple of vendor tables.

Address for GPS: 8 Driscol Rd, Greenfield NH 03047. Please park on one side of Mountain Rd, and enter at the Festival gate.

Festival hours: 10:30 am until 6 pm. Come early and stay for the day–the music is absolutely worth it!

Fee: $10 donation at the gate; children under 12 free. Please no dogs, except for service dogs.

In the event of heavy rain on that day, the Festival will have to be canceled.

Join us for a special midweek concert on Thursday, August 2 at 7:30 PM featuring the Gonzalo Bergara Trio playing acoustic gypsy jazz. Greg Loughman of the Rhythm Future Quartet (remember our Mother’s Day concert a few years back?) is hosting the band for a northeast US tour. Please come out and give them a warm NH welcome!

Join us for a special evening of traditional New Orleans jazz with Aurora Nealand and the Royal Roses at the Dublin School in Dublin, NH. This will be an outdoor event, weather permitting, Sunday, July 1, 7:00 pm at the Fountain Arts Building on the Dublin School campus. The concert is co-sponsored by The Walden School, the Monadnock Folklore Society and the Dublin School and is FREE and open to the public.

The New Orleans Moonshiners, Meschiya Lake’s Little Big Horns, Panorama Jazz Band, Rory Danger and the Danger Dangers, Monocle—just a partial list of groups to which Aurora Nealand claims membership.

The Royal Roses grew out of the rich resurgence that traditional jazz is seeing in New Orleans amongst the younger generation of musicians today. Saxophonist/vocalist Aurora Nealand has been playing in various groups in New Orleans since 2005, and the Royal Roses, founded in 2010, is her first venture as a bandleader. The Royal Roses draw their repertoire heavily from Sidney Bechet, Django Reinhart and traditional jazz of New Orleans. Comprised of some of the finest young players on the New Orleans music scene today, the Royal Roses are seeking to breath new energy, arrangements and compositions into this genre of music while exploring and learning from its rich history and tradition. They’ve performed in New Orleans at the French Quarter Festival, Satchmo Festival and Preservation Hall, as well as in NYC at Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival. This Spring The Royal Roses were voted “Best Traditional Jazz Band”  at the Big Easy Awards!! Their first album “A Tribute to Sydney Bechet: Live at Preservation Hall” was released in 2011 to national acclaim. Their second album “The LookBack Transmission” was released in 2014 and includes original and traditional compositions including one Ms. Nealand wrote for the HBO series “Treme”. Inn 2016 they released a third album, “Comeback Children”.

The Royal Roses lineup fronted by Aurora Nealand on vocals and saxophone includes Dave Boswell on trumpet, Jon Ramm on trombone, Matt Bell on guitar, Nathan Lambertson on bass, and Paul Thibodeaux playing drums.

Stuart Fuchs is a multi-instrumentalist, performing and teaching artist who presents his innovative & holistic music workshops worldwide.  Stuart’s music is both peaceful and exciting – offering open-hearted musical virtuosity with world-influenced nylon-stringed guitar, ukulele wizardry, native american flute & didjeridoo.  Be prepared for an uplifting, soulful and often hilarious blend of jazz, world music, poetry, storytelling and original songs.   Stuart has received the Ewing Arts Award from the Keene Sentinel in 2017 and was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to be an artist-in-residence at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, offering for his healing music for cancer patients, families and hospital staff.  He will be joined by Sarah Carlisle playing her upright bass & mandolin.  Together they tour internationally with the renowned Kirtan artist Snatam Kaur.  Stuart is an endorsing artist with D’addario Planet Waves and Kala Ukuleles.  www.stufuchs.com
