David Millstone has been calling contras and squares for more than 40 years, including at the monthly Northern Spy dance from 1980–2015. He’s been on staff at dance weekends or camps around the country from Alaska to Florida, Maine to Hawaii, plus numerous countries in Europe.
Stomp Rocket is a New England-based trio that’s played for contras throughout New England, and at dance weekends in Alaska, Tennessee, and Maryland. In 2019 Stomp Rocket was at Fleur de Lis Fling in Kentucky, The Florida Snowball, and the Corvallis Contra Weekend among other places.
As one organizer noted, “The New England contra dance scene is rife with cool band names, but the Stomp Rocket moniker may top them all, not only because it evokes a certain wholesome recklessness, but because it also perfectly captures the zip/chunk/zoom essence of this trio’s sound. Fiddler extraordinaire, guitarist, and teacher Dave Langford is best known as a member of the Latter Day Lizards. Mandolinist and tenor banjo player Glen Loper picks also with Frigate, Steampacket, and Riptide, among other bands. Bethany Waickman is the rhythm section of the dance trio Anadama, but her clean, driving DADGAD guitar has also backed such luminaries as fiddlers Lissa Schneckenburger and Rodney Miller and accordionist Jeremiah McLane.”
Don’t forget your mask and proof of vaccination! Read below for more details about our COVID health policies. Please come prepared- or check in early- to make arrival go smoothly so we can get on to the dancing!
Tracy Hall Contra Dances are organized by the Norwich Dance Committee, under the umbrella of Muskeg Music. We are always looking for more volunteers to help with set-up, working the door, and getting the word out. For more info contact uppervalleydmc@gmail.com
COVID Safety at Tracy Hall Dances
COVID is still out there, and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation to help keep the dances as safe as possible and allow us to get back to dancing after such a long time! Please take note of our COVID policies:
– Masks are required at the dance*
– Everyone attending will be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. You can do so at the door or register in advance to save time.
– We will connect emails at the door for contact tracing: anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 within 48 hours of the dance should email uppervalleydmc@gmail.com, and we will notify all dance attendees.
If you want to save time at the door, you can pre-register and certify your vaccine status by visiting uvdm.org and submitting your vaccine card. Preregistration is not required, but appreciated to help save time!
Anyone who pre-registered or attended one of the East Thetford Pavilion dances is already on the list, and doesn’t need to provide proof again.
*Masks will be optional downstairs during the pot-luck snacks at the break. Please put them back on when you go back upstairs.
