☼ ☼ ☼ Contra Dance | Nelson | Tony Parkes with the Emulsifiers

The Monadnock Folklore Society presents the Nelson Second Saturday Contra Dance on June 9th, featuring Tony Parkes calling with the Emulsifiers.

Tony Parkes has called square and contra dances since 1964 for people of all ages and all levels of experience. Dancers in 35 states, Canada, and Europe have enjoyed his clear calling, excellent timing, and positive, reassuring teaching manner.

Tony learned to call and play piano for square dances at the Farm and Wilderness Camps in Vermont. He is the author of Contra Dance Calling: A Basic Text and two collections of dance material. Currently Tony runs a monthly dance in Belmont, Massachusetts, focusing on squares of all regions and eras. He also appears at local contra dance series throughout New England and is a frequent headliner at dance weeks and weekends across the United States and Canada. He has taught dancing and calling in Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, England, and Germany.

The Emulsifiers are fiddlers Amy Cann and Eric Buddington, Tony Pisano playing accordion and guitar, and Joe De Paolo on drums. Amy and Eric are individually versatile and talented musicians who play in a wide range of styles. Together, they easily trade harmonies to create an energetic and symphonic sound.

Joe De Paolo has been drumming for over 30 years. Throughout his career Joe has played in rock, jazz, jazz/rock fusion, disco, funk, Zydeco, Cajun and country bands. His eclectic past has influenced his current style of playing and can be heard throughout the jigs and reels that are predominant in the contra dance music of today.

Dancing begins at 8:00 PM, with a short workshop beforehand. Beginners and singles are welcome and all dances are taught throughout the evening. Admission is $8 or $6 for students and seniors. The dance takes place in the historic Town Hall in Nelson, NH. For more information call 603.762.0235 or visit www.monadnockfolk.org. The Monadnock Folklore Society has presented contra dances and concerts of traditional music since 1982.
