THE DRUNKEN DANCER (or, A Dozen Dance Tunes), by Karen Tolman

Is the lantern broken?

Are the windows smashed?

Did the teetotaler reel

From his farewell to whiskey fast?

Are there stars in the morning?

Or, did he see the lamplighters?

Do devils really dream?

Or, did he hear a hundred pipers?

Come on up the back stairs,

You growling old man.

Your lady’s on the boat,

And, you’re on the stool of repentance!
